Over the course of six days in January 2021 five different hashtags on Twitter spread narratives against the different sides of Kenya’s often fraught political divide. These discussions began after a radio interview given by President Uhuru Kenyatta, during which he discussed various issues of national importance. A CfA investigation revealed a case of coordinated amplification amongst these hashtags. Two distinct narratives were identified: one against President Kenyatta and another against Deputy President William Ruto. The relationship between the two men is rocky - a very high profile example of the sort of divisive politics that has marked Kenya for years, sometimes with violent results.
